Energetic defender Wesley Fofana has admitted he considered a move to hometown club Marseille last summer. But ended up staying put as he seeks success at Chelsea. The French centre-
back joined the Blues from Leicester City in 2022 for a fee believed to be in the region of £75million. But was limited to just 15 appearances in his first season. The
23-year-old was plagued by injuries in his second season and has not featured in a single game this term, but he has been a regular in Enzo Marescu’s defence throughout all three of his league games so far this term.
However, the former Saint-Etienne youngster has been overlooked by France during the international break and the Marseille-born player took time out to speak to the media about the move.
“I spoke to Mehdi Benatia, the sporting director of Marseille, and I would be lying if I said I didn’t consider joining them,” Fofana began to French outlet ยูฟ่าเบท Foot
. “We had a very good conversation and I think everyone knows the reason. I thought about the move but in the end it was my current target. It’s about being a main player and being successful with Chelsea.”
“I have a contract with Chelsea until 2029 and then we’ll see. I’ve never hidden that Marseille is my city and my club. I’m a big Marseille fan. “
In the next few years we’ll see if I end up at Marseille or if I stay at Chelsea for the rest of my career.”
